Use the following thoughts and questions to have a spiritual conversation as a family. Don’t emphasize having the right answer, but focus on spending time discussing the Word as a family.

Scripture

Isaiah 9:1-7

Session Summary

The people in Isaiah’s day were suffering and oppressed under foreign rulers and Isaiah wanted to offer hope. He spoke of a light dawning on their darkness, a hope for the future, for the birth of a royal child; that royal child was Jesus. The promise was that this child would reign forever and He would be known as the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace. This names were to inspire hope in God’s people: One day, a King with these qualities would reign over all and His kingdom (and people) would prosper forever.

Conversation Questions

• How has our family changed since one or all of us came to know Christ?
• What type of peace does our family most need from the Lord right now?
• Which of the four names given to Christ here means the most to each member of our family? Why?
• When has God brought light to dark times our family experienced?

Family Challenge

As a family, research and talk about what each of your names mean. If parents had a reason for choosing a specific name, they may choose to share that with their student(s). Then, spend some time talking how Christians are all under the name of Christ, who is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace.
