Use the following thoughts and questions to have a spiritual conversation as a family. Don’t emphasize having the right answer, but focus on spending time discussing the Word as a family.

Scripture

Genesis 39:1-6,19-23; 41:14-16

Session Summary

Joseph experienced plenty of difficulty over the next few years: being sold into slavery, being falsely accused by his boss’s wife, and being thrown into prison. But God was with Joseph; He gave Joseph wisdom and favor. Even though Joseph’s circumstances were far from ideal, God used them to prepare him to carry out God’s plan. From the pit to the prison to the palace, God didn’t abandon Joseph. Instead, He strengthened Joseph to do exactly what God had planned for him, leading to the salvation of Joseph’s own family and many others during the famine.

Conversation Questions

• When has our family done the right thing even when it was difficult?
• What are some guards our family can put in place to help us when we’re tempted?
• How does seeing the big picture of Joseph’s story help our family to better understand the big picture of our own?
• Why is it important for our family to focus on what God may be doing and how we can help others instead of only looking at our own difficulties?

Family Challenge

Set a time this week to sit down with your family and discuss God’s promises that you hold onto and hope in during difficult times. Allow each family member to choose a specific promise/verse and write all of the verses in one place where your family can see them regularly. Talk about what these promises mean and how they give you hope.
