6.30.19- A Leader's Wisdom

Use the following thoughts and questions to have a spiritual conversation as a family. Don’t emphasize having the right answer, but focus on spending time discussing the Word as a family.

Scripture

Exodus 18:7-18,24-27

Session Summary

Moses’ and Jethro’s (Moses’ father-in-law) reunion began with describing and rejoicing over God’s goodness to the Israelites. Jethro even offered sacrifices to God, celebrating what the Lord had done in the lives of God’s people. Then, he stayed and saw how Moses spent all day, surrounded by people who came to him to “inquire of God.” Jethro knew that what he saw wasn’t good: this responsibility couldn’t only fall to Moses. Moses needed to delegate, and that’s exactly what Jethro suggested. He was honest with Moses, telling him the current process wasn’t good; however, he also offered a solution. Moses listened and delegated to other leaders to better serve God’s people. Like Moses, we all need the wisdom of other believers. We were not made to live life alone.

Conversation Questions

• Who do we interact with on a normal basis? How can our family make it a priority to praise God for what He’s doing in their lives?
• When has listening to the wisdom of other believers helped our family serve God better? • What wisdom has God given our family that we can share with someone around us now? Who comes to mind?
• How does it honor God when our family both walks alongside and rejoices with others?

Family Challenge

Throughout the week, each family member should ask God to make them aware of the needs around them—even in their own family. Make it a goal to spend time praying over how God would have you support those people. After a week, talk out your ideas as a family. Then, make a plan to help where you can. Use a calendar and choose days you can help each of the people your family suggested. Another option would be to talk about people who have influenced your family with godly wisdom. Make or buy thank you notes and allow each family member to write a short note of thanks and encouragement to each person. Then, make it a point to send those notes this week. As the notes are on their way, pray for the people they will reach.
