9.29.19-The Wisdom of a Deliverer

Use the following thoughts and questions to have a spiritual conversation as a family. Don’t emphasize having the right answer, but focus on spending time discussing the Word as a family.

Scripture

Judges 4:4-7,14-16; 5:1-5,9-11

Session Summary

The era of the judges began with God providing Othniel to deliver Israel from King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim and give God’s people peace for forty years (Judg. 3:7-11). Then came Ehud, who defeated King Eglon of Moab to give the people rest for eighty years, followed by Shamgar (Judg. 3:12-31). In this session, we will find that the Israelites were once again under God’s discipline because they had once again done what was evil in the Lord’s sight. This time, God used King Jabin of Canaan along with his commander Sisera to oppress His people. But once again, we will see the pattern unfold of the people crying out for relief, and God providing a deliver. Although this time, the deliver would be someone the Israelites may not have expected. We will see that God gives His people gifts and works through them so that He might receive glory.

Conversation Questions

• When has God laid out a clear plan for you to follow? How did you respond?
• How are you living out the calling God has put into your life by using the gifts He has given you for His glory?
• What can we do to better encourage one another toward deeper dependence on God and faithfulness to Him?
• Who needs to hear of God’s work in your life? What will you do to share it with them this week?

Family Challenge

As a family, conduct a “spiritual gifts” inventory test to see where each member is gifted (if you don’t already know). Discuss how each family member is currently using his or her gift in the service of others, or discuss how those gifts might be better utilized in service to the Kingdom. Encourage one another toward greater service in these areas and hold each other accountable for making the best use of the gifts and talents God has give each of you
